Research

At Webster University, faculty and researchers are given the platform to drive innovation, collaborate across disciplines, and make a lasting academic impact.

Our Research Community

WVPU's researchers work across different disciplines, methods, and theoretical traditions, brought together through five research clusters and a shared institutional profile rather than uniform method or subject. Our scale gives that community a particular character: researchers know one another's work, and interdisciplinary exchange happens through proximity, seminars, workshops, visiting-scholar events, and cluster-based conversation, rather than bureaucracy. Mentorship runs through this community at every stage.Senior researchers contribute not only through their own publications and funded projects, but through supervision, feedback, and the less visible work of helping colleagues sharpen a question, choose a method, or plan a publication strategy.

Research Careers and Development

WVPU supports researchers across career stages, from early-career scholars building a publication record and first grants toward established and leading researchers who direct funded projects, build consortia, and mentor others. This progression follows the European research-career framework (R1–R4), used at WVPU as a reference point for development, not as a rigid classification tied to academic rank.

Researchers are expected to pursue international visibility as a matter of course: presenting at international conferences, participating in peer review, building cooperation with Austrian public universities, and, increasingly, competing for external funding from bodies such as the ERC, FWF, WWTF, or EU programmes. External funding is treated as the clearest form of external recognition a researcher's work can receive, since it means peers and institutions are willing to entrust real resources to a proposed piece of work.

Support Structures

Researchers at WVPU are supported through the Research Services Officer, who coordinates funding searches, proposal planning, and reporting; through research infrastructure including R and SQL servers, dedicated laboratories, and biometric/psychophysiological research facilities; and through multi-year Performance Agreements that give research development a plan researchers revisit and adjust with academic leadership each year, rather than a fixed annual target imposed from outside.

Governance and Research Integrity

Governance and Research Integrity

WVPU is a full member of the Austrian Agency for Research Integrity (ÖAWI) and aligns its standards with the ALLEA European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. Research quality is overseen through academic leadership, University Senate participation, external peer review, and the same multi-year performance framework, giving researchers real independence alongside institutional accountability, from the first research question through public communication of results.
